Julian Klein ist Komponist und Regisseur, Direktor des Instituts für künstlerische Forschung Berlin (!KF), künstlerischer Leiter der Gruppe „a rose is”, Dozent für Regie / Experimentelles Musiktheater an der Universität der Künste Berlin sowie für Performance und Projektentwicklung an der Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main. an der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina. Er studierte Komposition bei Reinhard Febel, Nigel Osborne, Heiner Goebbels und Wolfgang Rihm sowie Musiktheorie, Mathematik und Physik und war während des Studiums Regieassistent und Bühnenkomponist u.a. am Niedersächsischen Staatstheater Hannover (Intendanz Ulrich Khuon). Seine Inszenierung „Hans Schleif“ mit Matthias Neukirch am Deutschen Theater Berlin wurde 2011 für den Friedrich-Luft-Preis nominiert.

Julian Klein is director of the Institute for Artistic Research Berlin, and teaches directing, performance art and project development at the University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt am Main and the University of Arts Berlin. He is also a founding member and artistic director of the interdisciplinary performance art group “a rose is”. In 2003 he was a member of the Young Academy at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the German National Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina. Julian Klein is member of the Editorial Board of the Journal for Artistic Research. He studied composition, music theory, mathematics and physics and worked during his studies as directing assistant, stage composer and theatre director.
